In the past, it was rare for both parents to be going out to work every day. Typically, the man would work at a steady job which he would keep for many years, while the wife stayed at home and raised the family. This meant that any children were brought up in a stable environment where they were always cared for, and they were often able to live their whole childhood in one place. The mother was constantly on hand to tend to the needs of the children. Now, that structure is more the exception than the norm, and children have to spend far more time alone.

The issue of children is one of the most vital in keeping a marriage together. If the partners do not agree on the issues of children when they get married in the first place, the has little chance of enduring. It is not uncommon now for people to want to get married but not have children, and any people who do want to have children want to delay this for a few years so they can do something else with their life first. If there is substantial disagreement on these issues, there is no real hope of saving a marriage.

There are different approaches to trying to save a marriage, and not every approach will work with all marriages.
