Online marriage counseling may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you consider counseling to help your marriage but it can be just as effective as traditional counseling in an office. The advantages are not having to take the time to get to an appointment, you just have to set aside the time to log-on and connect with your counseling session online. The big challenge however still exists and that is getting both of you to take part in the counseling and put the suggestions into practice so you can safe and or improve your marriage.

The solution which is being offered by marriage counseling online is one which is available to a greater number of people. Although the practitioner still has to be paid for their time, there are no travel expenses needed, and less time as you can attend the appointments in your own home or office. This solution is especially useful for those who live in remote rural areas, who often had to make expensive trips to the nearest large town or city to reach the nearest trained counselor. This can help to avoid the feeling of urgency, that everything has to happen soon because there may not be any further appointments.

If you are just starting out on your marital adventure, you may be feeling that you don't need any type of counseling. In the strictest sense, you are probably right. Need is the wrong word in this context. The only disadvantage of online marriage counseling is that the counselor will not be able to see the faces of the two partners. This is often useful, as it allows them the chance to tell when someone is hiding something and being defensive. The success of marriage counseling depends on all parties being totally frank and honest, and hiding nothing from either the other partner or the counselor. It is often not deliberate deceit which makes someone act like this, but a subconscious fear which needs to be released and overcome.

The person taking part in the online marriage counseling and being defensive will not even realize that this is happening, but the only chance the counselor will have to pick up on this is through the tone of the voice. There will be no visual signals. Many trained counselors will be able to detect a hesitation in someone's speech, and then be able to formulate some questions to that individual which will give tell tale answers. This is all a skill which takes experience to develop, but it helps make someone a far more effective online marriage counselor.

Deciding to take online marriage counseling is, as with every other purchase made online, something of a gamble. Unless you have prior experience of the organization you are dealing with, there is no guarantee as to the quality of the service you will get. Don't take chances here. If anyone is asking you to commit to several sessions in advance, they are not going to be worth taking a chance on. Relationship therapy does not normally take a huge number of sessions in any case. It is best to look for a service which gives a free or discounted intro session so you can judge their quality of online marriage counseling. But don’t get to concerned about the online aspect, you can end up with a poor counselor offline just as easy. There are plenty of stories to show that just getting a counseling license does not guarantee quality when it comes to getting the help you need.
